Axum – The Ancient Kingdom of Legends

Place

Axum

Axum is not just one of Ethiopia’s oldest cities. It is one of the greatest ancient civilizations the world has ever known, a place where legends, faith, architecture, and living memory still meet.

Description

Long before modern borders existed, the Kingdom of Axum stood as a powerful empire connected to trade routes stretching from Africa to Arabia and beyond. It was once one of the most important civilizations of the ancient world, known for its strength, intelligence, architecture, and deep spiritual history.

Beyond its historical importance, Axum carries something harder to explain: a feeling of mystery, faith, and timelessness that you feel the moment you arrive. Walking through Axum feels like stepping into living history. Massive stone obelisks rise from the earth, ancient tombs rest beneath the ground, and centuries-old stories still live through the people, churches, and traditions of the city.

Axum is deeply connected to the story of Christianity in Ethiopia. It was one of the first great kingdoms in the world to officially embrace Christianity during the 4th century under King Ezana, making Ethiopia one of the oldest Christian nations on Earth.

Faith, Legends & Living History

At the heart of the city stands the Church of St. Mary of Zion, one of Ethiopia’s most sacred churches. According to Ethiopian Orthodox belief, this church is the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, believed to contain the original tablets of the Ten Commandments brought from Jerusalem centuries ago. The Ark is protected by a single guardian monk who dedicates his entire life to watching over it.

Whether someone believes the story or not, the spiritual energy surrounding the church is deeply powerful and emotional.

Axum is also connected to the legendary Queen of Sheba, one of the most famous figures in Ethiopian history. According to tradition, the Queen of Sheba ruled from Axum before traveling to Jerusalem to meet King Solomon. Their story became one of the foundations of Ethiopian royal history and identity.

One of the most unforgettable parts of Axum is the experience itself. Axum continues to touch me in a deeply personal way every single time I visit. No matter how many times I return, I always fall in love with the city all over again, not only because of its incredible history, but because of its people.

The warmth, innocence, and genuine hospitality of the people of Axum is truly unforgettable. I have watched travelers arrive fascinated by the ancient civilization, the obelisks, the stories of the Queen of Sheba, and the mystery surrounding the Ark of the Covenant. But when they leave, it is often the people they talk about the most.

The kindness in small conversations, the peaceful atmosphere around the churches, the smiles from locals, and the feeling of being welcomed with sincerity are the things that stay in your heart long after the journey ends.

Axum is not only a place that teaches you history. It is a place that makes you feel connected to people, to faith, and to something much older and deeper than yourself.
